Slapstick

"Slapstick is a style of humor involving exaggerated physical activity that exceeds the boundaries of normal physical comedy. Slapstick may involve both intentional violence and violence by mishap, often resulting from inept use of props such as saws and ladders." - Wikipedia

Example

This is a clip from the television series "Mr. Bean", portrayed by Rowan Atkinson.

The humour in this clip is that when he loses his shoe, he hops around manically on one foot, and continues to do so when he visits the shoe shop, and even whilst he is purchasing another shoe and talking to the salesman.

  • The audience is then further shocked when she tumbles again, before calling the new emergency service.

  • The audience is surprised when the emergency services number is revealed, obviously an inconvenient and lengthy number, making it difficult to call in an emergency. She is clearly pained with the task of trying to remember the number and also having to dial it while she is trying to get assistance.

  • Difficulty Level: 2-3 stars

Slapstick does require a comprehension of human behaviour and what is and what is not expected in normal societal circumstances. Most people are generally aware of societal norms, therefore making slapstick reasonably easy to perform, but difficult to master.
