![]() Puns The dictionary defines a pun as "a joke exploiting the different possible meanings of a word or the fact that there are words which sound alike but have different meanings." One example is on my website "Your Royal Ha-Ness" which is a pun of "Your Royal Highness", a title given to members of a Royal Family. Commentary Puns are among my favourite forms of comedy because of the double meanings contained within a phrase. It usually has a "boomerang" effect (I just made that term up), in where the joke is "thrown" and then returns after the consideration of the phrase. On their face, puns wouldn't make sense unless the receiving audience was aware of the actual joke contained within the phrase itself. Example "I once submitted 10 puns to a contest to see which one would win. I was excited that one of my puns would win, but alas, no pun-in-ten-did." The pun is in the phrase "no pun in ten did", which is a wordplay of "no pun intended"; meaning the pun was not intended, (when really, the joke is a pun, so that it IS intended) making the joke a sort of "pun-ception" on itself. Further "Pun-Ception" is also another pun, based on the movie "inception" - the movie explores the idea of a dream within a dream. So "Pun-ception" would be a pun within a pun. Difficulty Level - 3-4/5 Puns are generally pretty easy to do: (ie. jesting case - just in case), but can increase in complexity for those who like a challenge! |
